Australia travel tips
The essentials Michael shares before every Australia trip: visas, seasons, money, getting around and staying safe in the sun.
Visas and entry
Most visitors need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) or an eVisitor visa. Apply online before your trip through the official Australian Government channels; processing is usually quick.
Best time to visit
Australia is a year-round destination. Summer (December to February) is ideal for the southern beaches; winter (June to August) is the best time for the Outback and the tropical north.
Australia travel guidesMoney
Australia uses the Australian dollar (AUD). Cards are widely accepted and ATMs are easy to find in cities and towns. Tipping is not compulsory.
Health and safety
Australia is generally very safe. Stay sun-smart with high-SPF sunscreen and a hat, drink plenty of water, and always swim between the flags.
Getting around
Distances are big: domestic flights connect the major cities, and a hire car or campervan is best for road trips. Trains and coaches cover some scenic routes.
Rental and transport partnersPacking
Pack layers, as the weather varies a lot by region, plus swimwear, comfortable walking shoes and reef-safe sunscreen.
Time zones
Australia has three main time zones: eastern (AEST), central (ACST) and western (AWST). Some states use daylight saving from October to April, others don't.
Local customs
Australians are friendly and relaxed. Be on time for tours and bookings, and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural sites.
Entry rules change. Check the official government site for your passport before you book.
